Marin American Indian Alliance to Host 2nd Annual Marin Powwow

Terra Linda High School New Gym
320 Nova Albion Way
San Rafael, California 94903
March 17, 2024
11:00 AM PT - 8:00 PM PT

All are welcome to the 2nd Annual Marin Powwow to join in celebration of the Indigenous communities that live and work in Marin on Coast Miwok land. The event is hosted by the non-profit Marin American Indian Alliance and Sponsored by Marin Community Foundation and County of Marin.

Since 1968 the Marin American Indian Alliance (MAIA) has been a place where Indigenous people get together to share traditions, songs, dances and prayer so MAIA is excited to have this opportunity to bring the community together in this good way.

Between all the various Nations represented in the Bay Area there is a wide variety of traditions about welcoming the springtime, but we can all agree that getting together to sing and dance after the challenges of winter is an important and welcome celebration.

The 2nd Annual Marin Powwow will be a traditional powwow in that there will be no competition dance contest for the categories but rather a celebration of various dancers performing for the people and community. The MC will also announce several times throughout the day when there is a Inter-tribal dance, which means any one can enter the arbor and dance and you don’t have to be wearing regalia.

This year’s powwow will be a longer day, ending at 8 pm and there will be two grand entries.

There will be also be performances by two California dance groups, Aztec dancers, Hawaiian dancers and a Hoop dancer. Visitors can look forward to three food vendors serving Indian Fry Bread, Buffalo Burgers, Rez Dogs, Burritos, Kettle Corn and more.

There will be several Native American arts/crafts vendors selling a variety of items including bead work, original art, gourd and clay masks, Natve themed shirts, glass art, drums and much more.

Due to the overwhelming response to last year’s event it will be held at a larger facility at Terra Linda High School’s large gym located at 320 Nova Albion Way, San Rafael.

Admission is free and no alcohol or drugs are permitted at the event.
