Help Stop State Assembly Bill 84

Please call your State Senator now
August 20, 2018

AB 84 is an eleventh hour California gut-and-amend bill to allow the creation of four completely new political party committees that are directed by legislative leaders.

AB 84 will let special interests legally give giant checks directly to the very legislative leaders who control which laws are and are not passed.

They would be allowed to accept special interest contributions up to $36,500 (8 times the current limit) to give directly to candidates, and allowed to accept unlimited contributions for independent expenditures to support or attack candidates, all without having to show their top funders!

The full Senate could vote on AB 84 as soon as tomorrow — we need Senators to receive many phone calls from their constituents.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATOR'S OFFICE!

CLICK HERE FOR THE PHONE NUMBER-- Urge them to STOP AB 84. Calling is quick and the most powerful thing you can do!

AB 84 would also let legislative leaders raise unlimited amounts of money for independent expenditures attacking or supporting candidates. Individual legislators and candidates will face more choices in which it's extremely difficult to vote their conscience or to protect their constituents.

California Common Cause calls AB 84 "the biggest rollback of the Political Reform Act's protections in at least a decade."

The League of Women Voters of California points out that "the bill's entirely new language was introduced at the eleventh hour and has largely bypassed public review."

AB 84 is opposed by every major California good-government group and other leading non-profits, including California Clean Money Campaign, California Common Cause, the California League of Conservation Voters, CALPIRG, Climate Hawks, Courage Campaign, and the League of Women Voters of California.
