Cal Humanities is accepting applications for the California Documentary Project, a competitive grants program that supports documentary film, radio, and new media productions designed to enhance an understanding of California and its cultures, peoples, and histories.

Projects must use the humanities to provide context, depth, and perspective and be suitable for California and national audiences through broadcast and/or distribution. CDP grants support projects at the research and development, production, and public engagement stages.

1) Research and Development: Grants of up to $10,000 are awarded to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions in their earliest stages. Projects must actively involve at least three humanities advisors who will help frame and contextualize subject matter throughout the research and development phase.

2) Production: Grants of up to $50,000 are awarded to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions and help propel projects toward completion. Projects must be in the production stage, be a work in progress, and actively involve at least two humanities advisors in the production process.

3) CDP NEXT GEN: Grants of up to $15,000 are awarded to youth media organizations in support of emerging California media makers age 18 and under. The program will support short documentary films or podcasts that shed light on a problem as well as a solution to the problem proposed by young people.

Grant requests must be matched on at least a one-to-one basis (cash or in-kind) by a non-federal-government source(s). Eligible applicants must have tax-exempt status or a tax-exempt organization as a fiscal sponsor.
