Livable California: Action Alert: Oppose Senate Bill 828

Do Your Part. Help create this headline:

"Another defeat for Wiener: SB-828, like SB-827, goes down in defeat"

Background Info:

Many of you signed the petition to state legislators in opposition to SB-827 and SB-828. Since then, SB-827 was defeated and SB-828 has been revised to reduce RHNA allocation to 125%, which is still too high. The bill curtails local control, favors developers, and extends the state's practice of passing one-size-fits-all legislation.

Current Situation:

The bill comes before the Assembly Appropriations Committee on either August 8th or 15th, The date will be announced August 2, so NOW is the time to take action. In the Appropriation's Committee, a bill is typically expected to cost the state General Fund no more than $150,000, but the staff reports SB-828 will cost the state $471,000/year; and communities will incur "unknown significant local costs."

10-Minute ACTION: Send an email to the Assembly Appropriations Committee Chair (sample below).

Subject: OPPOSE SB 828

To the Honorable Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher:

I/we strongly oppose and urge you to oppose, SB 828. Staff estimate the costs at an annual expense of $471,000, far beyond the $150,000 threshold. In addition it calculates "unknown significant local costs, placing undue financial burden on all California cities, without an adequate source of funding. Please oppose SB-828 because it is too costly to the state and the cities.

Thank You,

YOUR NAME, CITY and ORGANIZATION (if applicable)

Forward this e-mail to other engaged people or organizations in California and encourage them to join you in taking action.

If you have 10 more minutes: Leave a message for the Assembly Appropriations Consultant, the Committee (below), and your own State Assembly representative.
