Join KQED at a LIVE Broadcast of “Forum” As Michael Krasny Addresses the Hot Topics of Traffic Congestion and Homelessness in Marin 9AM Topic: "Decongesting Marin County"
From bottlenecks on Highway 101 to gridlock on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Marin County residents are increasingly frustrated by traffic congestion. Michael Krasny, host of “Forum,” will talk with local officials, transit advocates, and commuters about the future of transportation in the region, including the commencement of SMART rail service between San Rafael and Santa Rosa later this year.
Proposed fixes include implementation of Adaptive Signal Controls on major arteries like SF Drake; opening carpool lanes to solo toll-paying drivers; widening freeways; boosting mass transit; encouraging carpooling; expedited reopening of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge’s third lanes; and building a new 101-580 interchange. Conditions are bad now and could worsen owing to urbanization pressure from regional organizations (such as ABAG and MTC) and legislative initiatives that limit local communities’ control over development.
10 AM Topic: As Homelessness Rises in Marin, A Search for Solutions Marin has been struggling to deal with its substantial homeless population, and San Rafael is at the heart of the county’s effort. According to the Marin Independent Journal, San Rafael’s homeless population is larger on a per capita basis than San Francisco’s. Amid growing community concerns and tensions, the city hopes to acquire a new 20,000-square-foot facility to help the homeless. We’ll examine the question of how to cope with an enduring problem in one of the state’s wealthiest counties. Wednesday, June 22 @ 8:30 am - 11:00 am 8:30 - Auditorium open.
