National Trust for Historic Preservation Awards “Women Helping All People”

A Preservation Grant to contract the services of Garavaglia Architecture, Inc. to provide architectural preservation consulting services for the development and submission of a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Nomination for the Golden Gate Village public housing development.

Marin City, California, August 22, 2016, Women Helping All People was awarded a $ 5000.00 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

These grant funds will be used to include an expansion of the Historic Resource Evaluation (HRE) that the architecture firm had already completed for WHAP in June, 2015. The HRE determined that Golden Gate Village housing complex is eligible for listing on the NRHP, as well as the California Register of Historic Resources. Hence, this grant proposal is to pay for an extension of the work that has already been done to place the Golden Gate Village on the California State and National historic registries.

The Golden Gate Village, Marin City, California has a place in American history. Initially named Marin City Public Housing, the Golden Gate Village highlights 20th-century architectural innovation in housing community development and is the sister-development of the iconic Marin County Civic Center that was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is also a historic icon of the African American community in Marin County, California.

The Golden Gate Village is a remnant of a wonderful past in which a segment of the African American community left their homes in the southern parts of the United States and headed west to dedicate their lives to the World War II efforts at home by building war ships at the Marin Shipyard in Sausalito, California. Once the war ended, the African American community was facing homelessness due to the foreseen demolition of the temporary housing in Marin City coupled with racial discrimination practices in the housing sector of Marin County communities, Blacks had nowhere to go but remain where they were.

Golden Gate Village is a manifestation of public activism at the grassroots level in which the African American community in Marin City mobilized a county population to vote for federal funds to create Marin County’s first and only family public housing development. It is monument of African American resistance to societal repression and a symbol of stewardship in which Americans, rich and poor, worked together for a public good to benefit one of America’s most historically terrorized and suppressed population.

Golden Gate Village is comprised of award winning historic, innovative architectural designed housing buildings built in 1960. Architect Aaron Green, a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé and west-coast office partner, along with his associate, John Carl Warneke, designed the public housing complex that complemented the natural aesthetics of sloping hillsides and breathtaking bay views. The mixed development of 132 units low-rise and 168 units high-rise housing are on a 365 acre sloping site at the entrance of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Once Golden Gate Village is placed on the national registry, this architectural marvel will receive the recognition, attention and respect it so rightfully deserves.

"Organizations like Women Helping All People help to ensure that communities and towns all across America retain their unique sense of place," said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "We are honored to provide a grant to Women Helping All People, which will use the funds to help preserve an important piece of our shared national heritage."

Grants from the National Trust Preservation Funds range from $2,500 to $5,000 and have provided over $15 million since 2003. These matching grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies across the country to support wide-ranging activities including consultant services for rehabilitating buildings, technical assistance for tourism that promotes historic resources, and the development of materials for education and outreach campaigns.
