Oppose Change of Use of Alto Bowl/Horse Hill Open Space Hiking/Walking and Equestrian Trails
Please support the Petition by the Friends of Marin Open Space.
Hello, Marin neighbors:
We love the idea of cycling in Marin County, which is why we are so pleased that there are already a large number of trails, roads and streets for bicyclists to enjoy. In fact, John Palmer and Francine Millman, on behalf of the Scott Valley HOA, recently lobbied the Mill Valley City Council to spend more funds than originally projected in order to build a Class III bicycle lane alongside Camino Alto all the way from E. Blithedale to the Corte Madera city limit. In addition, the council has promised to attempt to locate funding to bring the same route to the much desired Class II bicycle lane as soon as possible.
We also love the natural habitat that surrounds us, where one can take quiet and leisurely walks, ride a horse, jog or walk dogs, leaving the habitat as it was found.
Several bicycle advocacy groups have been in the process of petitioning the Marin County Board of Supervisors (MCBOS) to open several areas in Marin that are currently designated for ‘no bicycles’, including the Alto Bowl/Horse Hill preserve. There are already many cyclists currently riding across this open space land, even though it is a ticketable offense, destroying the natural habitat that many enjoy, and disturbing the animals that live here. In terms of impact, there is no comparison between the small number of hikers who visit these nearly pristine lands and the several hundred who would ride their bikes across them.
These illegal cyclists are swarming over to Alto Bowl/Horse Hill, disregarding the natural environment so precious to us all. Their approach to ‘sharing’ the space has become increasingly problematic, including cutting through private property to get to these areas.
We ask that you sign the petition sponsored by the Friends of Marin Open Space, and join us in asking the MCBOS and Marin County Parks to oppose changing the current use designation (no bicycles), and to leave this area in a more natural state for those who want to walk/hike, jog and ride horses here.
Please click on the link below to take you to the online petition. It will take you only a few moments to sign. In addition, please let others know about this petition so that we can demonstrate to the MCBOS that we deeply care about preserving the natural environment here in Scott Valley and surrounds.
Please oppose a change of use for these unique trails. Sign our Petition today! Thank you!
