Gerbode Foundation Invites Applications for Theater Commissioning Awards

June 9, 2015 to August 20, 2015

The San Francisco-based Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation, in partnership with the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, has announced a new fund for the creation and production of new works by California playwrights.

These awards are part of a three-year, $900,000 initiative by the Gerbode and Hewlett Foundations to support the works of individual Bay Area artists and invest in their creative vision. Last year, the initiative supported choreography; in 2016, it will support music.

This year, grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded to projects that encourage the creative endeavors and professional development of promising California playwrights. The resulting works will have their world premieres in Bay Area public performances between December 2016 and June 2018. Proposed commissions in all theater forms will be considered.

To be eligible, applicants must be nonprofit and based in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, or Sonoma.

An advisory panel of theater experts from across the United States will review all proposals, and final selections will be made by the Gerbode Foundation. Winners will be announced in January 2016.

Visit the Gerbode Foundation website for complete program guidelines and application instructions.
