Police unions’ power wanes, but how about teachers?

Many of you have written to me over the years - and especially recently - about public sector union power that perpetuates the pension crisis.

It took a tragedy to get the public's attention, but finally the focus is shifting to the role of unions and their relationships with elected officials through generous campaign contributions and political support.

Several "trailer bills" just adopted by the California Legislature reflect the strength of this relationship.

Dan Walters' column today highlights some of those bills. It's interesting to note that in the case of the teachers' unions, their 'demands' were in some cases contrary to the school districts' needs and wishes.

Let's hope this discussion continues and that it leads to a resolution that will make the public pension system sustainable.
