New Century Chamber Orchestra continues its 2021-2022 season with an evening of illuminating American contemporary works highlighted by the world premiere of Mark Adamo's Last Year, a cello concerto that features acclaimed contemporary music champion Jeffrey Zeigler as soloist. Making his New Century debut, Zeigler will also appear as soloist for William Grant Still's Phantom Chapel and will lead the ensemble in the world premiere of Paola Prestini's reimagining of Tanya Tagaq's "In Me" and Andy Akiho's Oscillate.
A joint commission by a consortium of orchestras that includes New Century Chamber Orchestra, Mark Adamo's Last Year is inspired by Vivaldi's Four Seasons and explores how Vivaldi might have written this work in the modern era under the threat of global warming. Best known for his operatic and vocal works, Mark Adamo received national praise for his debut opera Little Women, which has become one of the most frequently performed American operas of the past twenty-five years.
Described by The New York Times as "fiery" and a player who performs "with unforced simplicity and beauty of tone," Jeffrey Zeigler returns to the Bay Area where he performed with Kronos Quartet for eight years. Zeigler will lead New Century as guest leader in a world premiere reimagining for solo cello and string orchestra of "In Me" from Tagaq's sixth full-length solo album Tongues, scheduled for release in March 2022. To complement the album, Tanya Tagaq invited artists of many genres to reinvent selections from Tongues, and Prestini's interpretation of "In Me" is one of the results of that collaboration.
Completing the program is Oscillate by Andy Akiho, a 2012 New York Philharmonic commission for string orchestra, percussion and piano that received its West Coast premiere in January 2016 at San Francisco Symphony's SoundBox.
