Journalist Zelda Bronstein writes, For the sake of democratic governance, fiscal sanity, environmental protection, and housing justice, MTC/CASA needs to be stopped.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission has failed to solve traffic and congestion problems. Now MTC wants to govern housing policy.
MTC describes their plan in the CASA Compact, a blueprint for 2019 housing laws. The Compact is an umbrella for Sen. Scott Wiener's SB-50 (which re-introduces SB-827). It is a top-down "permission slip" for developers to tear down single-family homes and build massive high-rises near bus stops. Legislation introduced through CASA will throw community and environmental laws out the window.
CASA is a Coup. It's been hatched behind closed doors to benefit wealthy corporations, big cities, and global real estate investors. It destroys affordable neighborhoods, forces people to move, and deepens economic inequality. It won't solve the low-income housing problem (as they want you to believe) and inflicts financial hardship on cities and tax-payers. It ignores common sense questions about water, sewers, and schools. CASA creates privatized regional government while destroying local control and democracy.
