Catalysts in Californa Times with guest Mike Griffiths, CA Cities for Local Control

Mike Griffiths is an elected member of the Torrance City Council and founder of California Cities for Local Control. Griffiths and an all-volunteer team of a dozen community leaders in southern California aim to get hundreds of California cities and city council members to sign a Resolution in support of local control. They object to the heavy-handed way state legislators are handing planning authority to outside developers and special interests.

Griffiths is the guest on the second episode of Catalysts in California Times. The six-part series is a collaboration between Catalysts founder Susan Kirsch and Guy Meyer, the 5-year host of Marin Cable-TV’s eclectic California Times.

“Thousands of Californians are in the dark about Sacramento’s ambitious housing legislation that strips away local control and seeks to put an end to single-family zoning,” says Kirsch. “Catalysts in California Times gives a voice to leaders who spark change and rouse others to get involved.”

Meyer interviewed Kirsch in the first episode. “We’re excite about this partnership,” says Meyer. “I’ve got the public television spot and Susan has a network of elected officials and community leaders eager to talk about housing bills that impinge on a community’s right to decide about growth, environmental protections, and housing density.”

Upcoming episodes feature attorney Hydee Feldstein, candidate for Los Angeles City Attorney, and John Heath, president of the United Homeowners’ Association, based in Los Angles.

Rick Johnson, forty-year veteran of the San Francisco Water District, explores water sources to meet the inflated and unrealistic Regional Housing Need Allocation (RHNA) numbers.

Palo Alto City Council member Lydia Kou and Peggy Haung, mayor of Yorba Linda in southern California, describe how their communities are unique, but share the commonality of harmful impact from poorly conceived state legislation.

A new interview will be posted on the CatalystsCA.org website the beginning of each week. The show also airs on Channel 26, Marin’s cable television station, on Mondays at 6:00 pm and Tuesdays at 10:30 am.
