Protect Sustainable Farming in California!
The following is posted to support the work of the Center for Food Safety, a national nonprofit organization. Governor Newsom and California leaders are deciding how our state can assist communities in recovering from the coronavirus pandemic right now. It’s such a critical time to ask these leaders to prioritize helping the food and agricultural sectors recover so that we can create jobs that also deliver healthy food to all Californians! One critical program that needs support is the California Healthy Soils Program, which provides funds to farmers and ranchers to restore our precious soils by implementing farming practices such as composting, planting cover crops, and hedgerows. These farming practices sequester carbon while also reducing chemical use, protecting air and water quality, and investing in local communities. Unfortunately, funding for the Healthy Soils Program is at risk of being cut. Write Governor Newsom now and urge him to support Healthy Soils! The CalRecycle Waste Reduce Program — which supports composting facilities and food waste recovery — is also at risk of being defunded. This program is crucial to improving the health of our soils through increasing the availability of compost, closing the loop for organic materials, and creating green jobs in California, all while reducing methane generation from landfills. We also support investing in improving overcrowded farmworker housing conditions to avoid the spread of the coronavirus and improve conditions for these essential workers. Specifically, we recommend expanding the Housing for the Harvest program to include all agricultural counties. Don’t wait! California’s Governor and legislators are making tough decisions about which programs to fund now. Every message you send makes a difference! |
