Nix-the-Nine Summary Report

The Nix-the-Nine Campaign wraps up the 2020 legislative session with a record seven wins (bills defeated) two loses (bills signed). Far from being a solo effort, the success of defeating seven of the nine bills is a credit to the work of the Embarcadero Institute, Livable California, the California Alliance of Local Electeds and many neighborhood, homeowner, and professional groups and hundreds of elected officials and community leaders.

Throughout the three-month campaign (July-September), we have written updates and issued calls to action for Marin Post readers. Now we post the Nix-the-Nine Campaign Summary Report with a review of the five strategies of the Campaign:

  1. Blogspot.com
  2. Weekly Zoom Meetings and Calls to Action
  3. Media Outreach
  4. Community Events
  5. Letter to the Governor & Change.Org Petition

Since we're moving into the World Series, consider this. A baseball team that goes into the playoffs is likely to have a game-winning percentage of 62% or better. Through combined effort, the Nix-the-Nine Campaign achieved a bill-winning percentage of 78%.

Even though the baseball season ends in October, the game begins again in the Spring. And even though the 2020 legislative season ended in September, Senator Scott Wiener and his colleagues have promised they'll be back with new housing bills for 2021.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the 2020 season! Most significantly, thanks to the Assembly members and Senators who voted in committee or in Floor votes to keep housing policy from going further off the rails. We look forward to another winning season in 2021.
