Harmful Microwave Radiation Coming To A Nearby Telephone Pole -Unless Residents Voice Concerns

Please contact the Marin County Board of Supervisors and Mill Valley Senior Planner Danielle Staude to help prevent the imminent placement of dangerous 4G and 5G Small Cell Towers on a telephone pole near you. Then, please spread the news!

**Scroll down for “TAKE ACTION” suggestions.

ISSUE

Without permits, crews have been stringing cable from telephone pole to telephone pole in preparation for AT&T and Verizon to install "Close Proximity Microwave Radiation Antennae" (AKA 'Small Cell Towers') for 4G and 5G technology in Unincorporated Mill Valley and in the City of Mill Valley. According to crew members, the antennae will be mounted every two to five telephone poles within two months. This will likely occur in other parts of the County too and may already be taking place.

**Note: “Close Proximity Microwave Radiation Antennae” are also referred to as “5G Small Cell Antennae”, “Distributed Antenna Systems” (DAS), “Small Cell Towers”, and “Small Cell Facilities”.

CONSEQUENCES

Serious adverse health effects may result from the round-the-clock millimeter microwave radiation of these small cell antennae. Such millimeter microwave radiation is far more potent than anything previously experienced from the electromagnetic spectrum. Numerous peer-reviewed studies worldwide, including those by the World Health Organization and the US National Toxicology Program, demonstrate potential harm to humans, animals, and the environment from exposure to wireless radiation. The harmful effects include increased risk of cancer, genetic damages, cardiovascular problems, abnormal brain function, impaired fertility, memory deficits, headaches, insomnia, confusion, weakness, etc.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE IS A BETTER OPTION

Wired networks, both optical fiber and copper, are a much better option than the harmful 5G wireless networks. According to the public policy report entitled; “Re-Inventing Wires; The Future of Landlines and Networks” – “Corporations invariably seek the cheapest, quickest, and most profitable path, which has led to the current emphasis on wireless…However, the mistaken upcoming 5G frenzy, with its millions of small cell antennas destined to clutter all neighborhoods and public right-of-ways, is dangerous, wasteful, and unnecessary.” Fiber optic cable is faster, more secure, more reliable, more energy efficient, more cost effective, healthier and safer than wireless networks.

Moreover, with fiber optic cable:

ADVOCACY

A few community organizations and active residents have sent letters and follow-up materials to the Marin County Board of Supervisors and the City of Mill Valley. Small groups of residents have met with Supervisor Kate Sears, Supervisor Dennis Rodoni, and Supervisor Damon Connolly. More plan to meet with Supervisor Katie Rice and Supervisor Judy Arnold. Another group met with the City of Mill Valley Senior Planner Danielle Staude.

County’s Response: The Supervisors and County Staff, that have been reached to date, indicated that they will look into possible actions that could be taken, which abide by State and Federal law. (E.g. Federal law prohibits jurisdictions from considering the health impacts of radio frequency emissions in their deliberations.)

Thus far, the County’s response is promising. However, the topic has not yet been put officially on the Board of Supervisors’ Agenda. A majority of the Supervisors must agree for any decisions to be made. Therefore, it is still very important for residents to contact the Supervisors and express concern about the dangers of the Close Proximity Microwave Radiation Antennae for 4G and 5G technology. The more residents that speak up, the more likely the Supervisors will take strong, protective measures quickly.

City of Mill Valley’s Response: After receiving correspondence from community organizations and concerned residents, representatives from the City of Mill Valley were quick to respond via email.

City Manager Jim McCann wrote to Sustainable TamAlmonte; “Thank you for sharing this with us. I want to be sure that you are aware that our Planning staff will be bringing a proposed ordinance to the Planning Commission later this month (August) and to the City Council at the beginning of September with recommendations to provide municipal code tools to better manage small cell and other telecommunication facilities within the confines of state and federal law.”

Mill Valley Senior Planner Danielle Staude and two other City planners met with a few residents on August 11th to discuss the issue. Senior Planner Staude is tasked with composing the new City of Mill Valley Ordinance for Wireless Telecommunication Facilities. Staude said that she wants to hear from residents to know what their views are. The more residents that express concern about the dangers of the 4G and 5G Small Cell Towers, the stronger and more protective the ordinance will be.
