Legacy of success in Marin City

Those who have heard JayVon Muhammad speak at public forums on health and income inequities facing African Americans in Marin know the passion she has brought to her role as CEO of Marin City Health and Wellness Center. Under her leadership, clinic sites have expanded from one to six, revenue has grown from $1.3M to $8.4M, staff size has increased 4-fold, and the organization has built $450,000 in savings to fund innovation and capital improvements.

When JayVon moves to Louisiana in January to lead another Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), she will be sadly missed.

JayVon leaves a legacy of success in Marin City. Read more about her work as a trailblazer for African American health equity at marincityclinic.org/CEO. Her successor, during the leadership search, is Kiki Jordan, the force behind Marin County's only freestanding birth center.

The Marin Family Birth Center is open to all women, and proudly serves mostly Medi-Cal moms. The midwifery care they receive is a game-changer in improving maternal health disparities for poor women and, especially, for Black women who are three times more likely to lose their or their baby's life within a year of childbirth.

The Marin City Health and Wellness Center has created many innovations in health equity, beyond the birth center. These include a Medication-Assisted Treatment program for opioid and alcohol addiction that has received statewide and national recognition for excellence, acclaimed Park Rx and Food Pharmacy programs that utilize open space and healthy foods (instead of medication) to help patients manage chronic conditions like diabetes, obesity and heart disease, and a private high school that brings behavioral health support and a curriculum focused on African American culture, leadership and role models.
