California Needs to Cap the Growth of Runaway Pensions
A column by David Schwartzman made me realize, once again, how 'different' California is in its governance.
It reminded me of a conversation CSPP had with Assemblyman Marc Levine when he was in his first term in the Legislature. We asked him what, if anything, he or others were doing to address the unfunded pension crisis. His response was that "pension reform" was not discussed at all. He did not elaborate, perhaps because that one sentence said it all.
Since those early days when CSPP endorsed Marc Levine over longtime SEIU top-brass Michael Allen, we have heard nothing from Mr. Levine about reform efforts. Is it entirely his fault? No. The simple truth is that the California Legislature is so deeply entrenched with the public sector unions that 'reform' is not included in their vocabulary.
Nor will it be without a major financial catastrophe or a complete overhaul of its membership.
