The Marin IJ endorsement of Larry Bragman over Ranjiv Khush for the MMWD Board, while expected, is disappointing. The Ross Valley is indebted to Bragman for his civic service for many years. The endorsement seems more related to Bragman’s political abilities and the support of many local politicians than his work on the board over the last 8 years.
Everyone who is concerned about Marin’s future water supply should read the unbiased and apolitical report from the Marin Grand Jury on the MMWD in its entirety. The MMWD Board reacted predictably, describing the report as lacking credibility. Bragman described the report as “being weaponized.” You should judge for yourself and vote accordingly.
Mr. Bragman is a latecomer in searching for new water supplies. He has consistently advocated conservation and more conservation over new supplies. Of the 2015 MMWD Urban Water Management report, Bragman said “We have conserved our way out of it. We have created a reservoir of conservation”. This culture is still present today, and why our water supply is still insecure.
Read the 2022 MMWD Urban Water Management report. In severe drought projection scenarios it is extremely troubling.
According to tree ring analysis the Southwest is probably in the most severe drought in the last twelve centuries. This is amply evident in the many multiple drought years in Marin since the 1970’s, and likely to worsen due to climate change.Yet the MMWD Board has been asleep. If you elect the same members, you can expect the same result.
What the IJ admires about Khush is that “His expertise as a water scientist makes him an unparalleled resource for all.” This Board needs a water scientist and not a politician. Let’s have a clean sweep of the present board. I urge your vote for Ranjiv Khush.
