The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof, shit detector. This is the writer's radar and all good writers have it.
In today's political scene, with competing ideologies being flung around and often in yo' face, Hemingway's wise words printed in the Paris Review in the 1930's remain more relevant than ever. Not just for writers.
It's also good for people trying to understand the subtle messaging and manipulations behind glib politicians' words. So, do the research, the analysis, look to the Big Picture and think independent of the mobs and the buzz on both sides of the political spectrum. Vote accordingly.
As in writing, so in the muddy world of politics. Develop a good B.S.D....!
